Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah
850 PM MDT Monday Oct 6 2008

Synopsis...high pressure will remain over the area through Tuesday.
The next cold storm system will drop south out of western Canada and
into the Great Basin late this week...and remain into the weekend.

&&

Discussion...flat upper ridge building into the Great Basin will
remain through Tuesday night. Stable and relatively dry airmass
associated with the ridge will keep temperatures generally seasonal and
conditions dry heading into midweek.

Heights will gradually lower over the basin as the westerlies begin
to sag south into the area. The development of an high-amplitude
upper ridge between 130-140w will allow for cold air to pile into
the basin late in the week. Significant intensification of shortwave
energy diving south out of western Canada will lead to the likely
development of a closed low over the basin Friday through the
weekend. Both the latest GFS and European model (ecmwf) pretty much in agreement with
the synoptic scale feature...leaving the details to be worked out
later on. For now much colder temperatures a given...with areas of
heavy precipitation a good bet toward Saturday and Sunday.

No update planned this evening.

&&

Aviation...VFR conditions will prevail throughout the overnight
hours at the kslc terminal. Light southeast drainage winds will develop
between 03-04z.

&&

Fire weather...a stable airmass along with fairly light transport
winds will keep clearing indices on the light side into Tuesday.
Morning valley inversions Wednesday will inhibit mixing during the
morning. Good heating and increasing transport winds will raise the
index during the afternoon. A dry cold front will push indices
higher on Thursday.

&&

Slc watches/warnings/advisories...
Utah...none.
Wyoming...none.
