thunderstorms across much of western... central and southern
Utah...
The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City has issued a red

NWS Forecaster Discussion
009 fxus65 kslc 040253 afdslc Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah 853 PM MDT Thursday Jul 3 2008 Synopsis...strong upper ridge over the area will shift slightly to the east on Independence day as a weak cold front approaches. This front will move across northern Utah Friday night and Saturday. Another weak disturbance will affect northern Utah on Sunday. A hot upper ridge will build back over the western Great Basin next week. && Discussion...high based convection today resulted in local strong microburst winds. Isolated microbursts will continue through the night for the western desert areas. Models suggest slightly higher moisture values being drawn north and over Utah by midday Friday. That will bring some cloud cover and a continued risk of microburst winds from showers and dry thunderstorms that develop. The ridge will weaken over the weekend with a cool front moving into northern Utah Friday night...settling east to west from Dugway to the Uinta Mountains Saturday afternoon. Another shortwave weakening the ridge will bring lift and increasing thunderstorms for Sunday...mainly north of the frontal boundary. && Aviation...southeast winds will continue through the night and increase Friday morning. Airport weather warning criteria may be met after about 15z Friday for gradient south winds. There will be a risk of stronger microburst winds mainly from the south Friday afternoon and evening. Ceilings remaining 6000 feet or higher. && Fire weather...red flag warning in place much of the district for Friday. Hot and windy weather will affect many areas along with lightning and microburst winds. Saturday will bring less lightning and more stable conditions to the north while the south will remain hot and breezy through Saturday. && Slc watches/warnings/advisories...
