Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah
855 PM MST Tuesday Dec 2 2008

Synopsis...a cold northwest flow aloft will remain across Utah
through Wednesday. The next weak storm system will move through
northern Utah and southwest Wyoming late Wednesday night and
Thursday. Warm and dry high pressure will settle over the area
for Friday and Saturday.

&&

Discussion...water vapor animation shows the well-defined upper
trough moving steadily southeast through Utah this evening. This feature
should exits through the 4-corners region by midnight...leaving a
significantly colder airmass in place late tonight. Shallow cold
advection and abundant low-level moisture across far northern Utah and SW
Wyoming overnight will keep plenty of clouds in place along with
some very light precipitation into Wednesday morning.

The next system dropping south-southeast out of western Canada late
Wednesday will stretch out SW-NE as it enters northern Utah. Though
weakening...this feature still has adequate dynamic lift and thermal
advection to indicate enough lift for precipitation. Current forecast
package does have a mention of precipitation for the north...which looks
fine for now.

Latest European model (ecmwf)/GFS both show a closed low forming along the California coast
by Friday...with ridging developing over the Great Basin for the
weekend. A developing ridge near or a little west of 140w will bring
a series of energetic troughs southeast through the basin beginning early
next week. Substantial amounts of precipitation are possible during next
week...with temperatures cold enough for snow most elevations by midweek.

Issued an earlier update to drop the Wind Advisory and adjust temperatures
a bit up north due to cloud cover.

&&

Aviation...southeasterly drainage winds are expected to develop at
the slc terminal between 08z and 11z...with a 20 percent chance that
winds will stay light northerly through the entire night. Ceilings
are still likely to be below 7000ft above ground level for periods of time
throughout tonight...though there is a chance that clouds will
become scattered between 05z and 09z.

&&

Slc watches/warnings/advisories...
Utah...none.
Wyoming...none.
