NWS Forecaster Discussion
839 fxus63 kfsd 030915 afdfsd Area forecast discussion for southeast South Dakota/southwest Minnesota/northwest Iowa National Weather Service Sioux Falls South Dakota 315 am CST Wednesday Dec 3 2008 Discussion... snow is quickly ending as short wave moves into eastern South Dakota. Snowfall amounts with this feature have generally been in the 1 to 3 inch range. Will not keep advisories going past 4 am package as any additional snow over far eastern County Warning Area will be less than 1 inch. Some clearing will occur behind this short wave so will go with skies becoming pc. Will not warm much with snow cover and cold air advection so will struggle to climb much through the 20s. Winds will also be gusty today out of northwest at 15 to 30 miles per hour gradually decreasing this afternoon ahead of next short wave. Cloud cover should again increase from the northwest this afternoon and evening ahead of next weak short wave and secondary surge of colder air. Not as much moisture to work with but will see some light snow develop with this feature tonight. Will give best chance of S- NE of a Hon-fsd-spw line tonight into Thursday morning. Amounts should be less than 1 inch. Should be a few degree colder on Thursday with a chance of some lingering flurries or snow showers. Yet another short wave will bring a brief period of warm air advection on Friday. Surface low pressure and dynamics further NE with this system Friday night and would think bulk of snow should remain north of County Warning Area with only a small chance of S- east of i29 Friday night. Surface high will build on over County Warning Area Sat and should be cooler again as cold air advection kicks in. Will lower temperatures a few degree. Fresh snow cover may make it hard to get much above 20 across northestern County Warning Area. Looks like a clipper northwest flow pattern sun into middle of next week. Current GFS has systems generally remaining north of County Warning Area...but still could see chance of S- with best chance eastern County Warning Area. && Aviation... band of light snow will move across northwest Iowa through 11z dropping visibilities down to 1 sm at times. Brisk northwest winds will prevail across region today. Am expecting stratocumulus to develop during the day today...which may create some marginal MVFR conditions by this afternoon. These clouds should rapidly dissipate towards sunset. && Fsd watches/warnings/advisories... Iowa...none. Minnesota...none. South Dakota...none. NE...none. && $$
