 Heat Advisory
Statement as of 8:01 PM PDT on May 16, 2008

... Heat advisory will expire at 8 PM PDT this evening
for southwest Washington and northwest Oregon from the coast to

The heat advisory will expire at 8 PM PDT this evening.

Temperatures over southwest Washington and northwest Oregon from
the coast to the Cascade foothills and in the western Columbia
River gorge reached up into the 90s today... temperatures around 100
degrees were not uncommon all the way to the coast. Temperatures
are mostly in the 80s to lower 90s now and will continue to fall
this evening and tonight as the high pressure area weakens. Low
temperatures later tonight will fall mostly into the 55 to 60
degree range and high temperatures on Saturday should only be
around 60 at the coast and in the 80s in the inland valleys.

For those that endured todays heat is is still a good idea to
drink plenty of fluids. Stay in an air conditioned room if
possible and cool down... and check up on relatives and neighbors.

 Record Report
Statement as of 5:30 PM PDT on May 16, 2008

... Record high minimum temperatures recorded this morning...
... Record maximum temperatures smashed this afternoon...

A strong upper ridge... clear skies and offshore flow combined to
produce afternoon highs today in the mid and upper 90s. Many
locations broke their daily high temperature records... with a few
stations around 10 degrees above the previous record.

Additionally... after a very warm day yesterday... temperatures were
not as able to recover overnight as is usually the case.
Therefore... many stations recorded record high daily minimum
temperatures this morning.

All new records are listed in the respective tables below.

Here are the new record high minimums for may 16:

Location minimum previous record
===================================================================
Astoria... ... ... ... ... . 63 52 in 1983
Tillamook... ... ... ... .. 63 52 in 1995
Portland downtown... ... 92 87 in 1985
Troutdale... ... ... ... .. 56 (tied) 56 in 2006
McMinnville... ... ... ... 62 59 in 1997

Here are the new record maximums (so far) for may 16:

Hood River... ... ... ... . 91 (tied) 91 in 2006
====================================================================

Many local area observers and spotters recorded very high maximum
temperatures today. An observer in Florence Oregon measured a
maximum temperature of 99 degrees today... which is the second
highest temperature he has recorded in sixteen years of observing. A
past observer in Tillamook measured a maximum temperature of 100
degrees. Also... earlier this afternoon a spotter in North Salem
called in 96 degrees and a spotter in Swiss home called in 100
degrees. Both of these were recorded before the maximum heating of
the day.

Because warming may still occur late this afternoon... other records
may be set. This statement will likely be updated by tomorrow
morning at the latest with the final record maximum temperatures.
