NWS Forecaster Discussion
365 fxus65 klkn 130958 afdlkn Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Elko Nevada 258 am PDT Monday Oct 13 2008 Synopsis...high pressure will build over Nevada today and will remain over the area through late next week. Near record cold temperatures this morning will moderate to near normal readings by midweek. && Short term...today through Wednesday. Unseasonably cold temperatures are gripping the County Warning Area at present with many locations near record lows. All areas...including West Wendover...have now touched freezing...so will keep the freeze warning going as planned. Otherwise...storm system continuing to move away today will allow plenty of sunshine to return to the region for the first time since the middle of last week. Cold low levels will inhibit warming somewhat...but mixing looks a bit better with the inversion a bit higher than it appeared earlier...so allowed for warmer high temperatures than was thinking last night. Westerly flow will dominate over the next several days with a few pieces of energy sliding across to the north. However...these disturbances are week and moisture starved...so I do not expect any precipitation with them...and even clouds will be rather hard to come by. Milder air moving in aloft will allow temperatures to continue moderating on Tuesday and Wednesday. Lows tonight will be noticeably milder compared to tonight /though still rather chilly/...with more moderation Tuesday night. Winds will be rather light until the inversion completely mixes out Wednesday afternoon when a somewhat stronger westerly wind will develop. Rcm && Long term...Wednesday night through next Sunday. There is general agreement between the medium-range models this morning...however subtle differences do exist that could affect day-to-day operations. Nothing significant in the forecast. Consensus of pattern is to produce a slow progressive low- amplitude ridge traversing Nevada real estate Wednesday night through Sunday. NAM is showing a weak shortwave moving through the eastern side of the advancing ridge Wednesday night that will just throw a few high clouds across the north. The axis of ridge will pass through the lkn County Warning Area Thursday night...then maintain a presence near the Utah/Colorado border through Sunday as a trough tries to develop off the California coast. As this trough deepens...a relatively warm dry southwest flow will persist over the state Friday through Sunday. This will will continue with dry forecast for now. Temperatures will be near normal daytime and nighttime throughout the period. Lw && Aviation...clouds will continue to dissipate and move east of the area this morning. VFR conditions are expected through Monday. Lw && Lkn watches/warnings/advisories... freeze warning until 8 am PDT Monday for nvz033. && $$
