Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Elko Nevada
349 am PDT sun Mar 21 2010

Synopsis...high pressure will bring one more mild day to the
Silver state today. A cold front moving through the state tonight
and Monday will bring isolated showers north...and cooler daytime
temperatures Monday and Tuesday. High pressure will build back
into the region midweek... bringing a return to warmer
temperatures.

&&

Short term...today through Tuesday. At 500mb high pressure will
shift east today as a trough moves onto the northern California
coast. The trough...and associated cold front...will move across the
north tonight...bringing the 700mb temperature down to -7c as far south
as Elko. A stronger cold front will kick through the area Monday
night...bringing the 700mb temperature down to -10c over Elko by Tuesday
morning. Precipitable waters will be low with both fronts...around 0.35
inches...so marginal lifted indice's will have little affect. Measurable
precipitation will be mainly north of eko and wmc Monday...except
extending south into White Pine County. Trace precipitation...either
sprinkles or flurries... will be possible in wmc and eko. Showers
will linger Monday evening across White Pine County. Isolated
snowfall totals of up to an inch can not be ruled out in White
Pine County above 6500 feet.

High pressure will begin building back into the area on
Tuesday... with a brisk north wind keeping afternoon temperatures on the
cool side. Rea

Long term...Tuesday night through Saturday. Not much was changed
in the long term for this package from what was already in the
forecast as the 0z GFS and ec are fairly similar to previous runs.
Ridge still expected to build in Tuesday night and Wednesday. Weak
system still expected to pass to the north Thursday. Stronger but
still rather dry system still possible on Friday before another
ridge moves back in Saturday. Temperatures still expected to be
near to above normal thanks to zonal flow off the mild Pacific.
Rcm

&&

Aviation...VFR conditions expected through the taf period. High
clouds through 0z will then begin to lower and thicken at keko and
kwmc...but should remain fairly high and thin at kely and ktph.
However...ceilings should remain above VFR thresholds. A few showers
may pass fairly close by to the north of kwmc and keko after
2z...but none are expected to directly affect either terminal.
Winds will generally be light...but can gust over 20 knots between
20z and 2z...particularly at kwmc. Rcm

Lkn watches/warnings/advisories...
